I'm not sure if this is where I should put this. I attended the COABE conference and offered to send you the proposal we used to get a grant to bring students to COABE. Here is my proposal.

Dear San Diego Council on Literacy (SDCOL):
Nancy Hampson, a colleague at SDCCD, recommended that I write a proposal to send one or two of our students to the COABE conference (Commission on Adult Basic Education) which will be held in St Louis, Missouri in April. This application is for funding from the Literacy Network Support Fund.
The COABE conference is one of the premier conferences in adult basic education and this year has included a learner strand. The website states expresses the many benefits of the conference:
“A special conference strand for students has been added. The Adult Learner Leadership Strand will provide student-friendly workshops, opportunities for students to volunteer, and for students to network with others nationwide. The benefits of this strand for teachers/administrators are to broaden the student scope of adult literacy, generate student leadership and promote advocacy and increased retention & expanded participation in your program.” http://www.coabe.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=conferences
For more information on the Adult Learner Strand, contact Marcia Hayes-Harris, Student Leadership Chair, at Marcia.hayes-harris@slps.org
Learner development is the major benefit for this conference. It would be great if we could send 2 students to COABE. When they get back, they could meet with other learners to share their experience or write an article in the Council's newsletter or present at the annual Adult Learner Conference or Tutor Conference.
Last year, we were granted funding to send two students to Boston for the WE LEARN conference. The effect on those students was enormous. One has successfully completed her GED and is now a student in good standing at Mesa College. The other is still in school and has represented READ San Diego in a street fair. She also attended the Henry Huffman Leadership Institute and is now a facilitator for a Leadership Institute for the Carlsbad Library program. These students have grown from their conference experience and have become role models for other students in our programs. If we could send two new students, the momentum will build that shows students that they can move mountains if they work hard, apply themselves and take a step out of their box.
Thank for your consideration.
